Duration: 1 Month

Project Type: Personal

Applications:

Modelling/UV Mapping: Maya

Texturing: Substance Painter and Photoshop

Rendering/Lighting: Unreal Engine and Marmoset Toolbag

Description: I am taught that, the best way to get better at drawing is to use life-models instead of looking at a 2D image/photograph. Observing and understanding a 3D object/person in real life, improves our drawing skills more than looking at a 2D image and creating another 2D image from it.
In this project, I wanted to adapt this principle. I borrowed one of my friends’ Nintendo Switch and tried to model it by looking at it in real life.
My main goal for this project was to work on my hard surface modelling and texture/alpha creating skills.
The part which took most of my time was surely creating the alphas.
I wrote the texts on the back side of the joy-cons and the main body word by word on Photoshop and imported those as alphas to Substance Painter.

Furthermore, when I was doing this project, the Animal Crossing Switch was only recently released. Therefore, I wasn’t able to find good pictures of it showing the textures on its back. I hand-drawn those textures on Photoshop and imported them into Substance Painter.

To show off both regular and the Animal Crossing Switch textures, I used the same 3D models with 2 different sets of textures.
Finally, I lit and rendered the final scene in Unreal Engine.
